NEW ORLEANS -- The 2008 Essence Music Awards kicks off Friday, but today thousands of kids got their own chance to "party with a purpose."They packed in to the Morial Convention Center Thursday for music, fun and inspiration. The program, called Planning for Life: Mind, Body and Soul, was sponsored by the U.S. Army and reinforces the importance of education."They (kids) have the power to make their own choices," Michele Jones of the U.S. Army said.
For many youth, the program was a chance to escape from the harsh realities of violence in their neighborhoods."It keeps kids off the streets and from getting hurt everyday when they have drive-bys and shooting,” Jonathan Tate, 15, said. “That's one less child that has to go to the graveyard."The youth rally continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Morial Convention Center.
