NEW ORLEANS -- Gov. Bobby Jindal has postponed Louisiana's congressional primaries.Jindal said the elections shouldn't be held so soon after the disruptions of Hurricane Gustav.Jindal said he acted on the recommendation of Secretary of State Jay Dardenne.
Dardenne said there are too many power outages and too many people away from their homes to hold an election.Louisiana has at least one primary in four of its seven congressional districts on Saturday. They include a Democratic primary in which indicted U.S. Representative William Jefferson of New Orleans faces six challengers. Jefferson is facing federal allegations of bribery.Dardenne said he won't decide when to hold the elections until he has a chance to survey each district.
